Manny Pacquiao will be facing off against Chris Algieri in the ring later this year on Nov. 22. Algieri will be taking his shot at the welterweight champion at the Venetian in Macao, China. The fight will be telecast on HBO pay-per-view.
Algieri currently holds a record of 20-0 with eight knockouts and he says that he deserved his shot at the title against Pacquiao, whose record is 56-5-2 with 38 KOs. The American fighter also says that people underestimates his power because of his eight knockouts out of 20 fights.
“I hit harder than you think,” Algieri said during an exclusive overseas telephone interview with BoxingScene.com. He also claimed that his previous opponent in a June bout, Russian boxer Ruslan Provodnikov, felt his power.
Algieri’s 12-round fight against Provodnikov ended in a judge’s decision. During the match, Algieri was dropped twice during the first round, his right eye almost closing shut during the eighth round. He somehow managed to compose himself and fight admirably against the Russian, however.
The American fighter also boasted of his height and weight advantage against Pacquiao.
“I have special skills which I can keep up in a fight. I know how to use my reach advantage and my jab is the key. This is boxing,” he said.
The fight against Pacquiao is supposedly Algieri’s opportunity to be on the main stage with Pacquiao, who is a living legend. He has also said that he is looking forward to a great fight and is hoping to win to show the world what he can do.
Pacquiao’s coach, Freddie Roach, who has been involved in choosing fights, said that the fight was Bob Arum’s decision.
